Matthew Hulteen is the CSO's Young Artist Audition winner for 2008. Matthew is a junior at Sterling High School and has studied saxophone with Brandi Spreeman since third grade. His introduction to music, however, began much earlier. As his mother was completing a master's degree in music, three-year-old Matthew had a great time with music flash cards and playing the piano. His parents are Ron and Rhonda Hulteen, and he has an older sister, Laura.
Matthew has earned recognition in both piano and saxophone, including first division ratings at school music contests and prominent chairs in Illinois Music Educators Association district bands through grade school and high school. He is also a high school honor student at Sterling High School, an achievement he attributes to his music training. His future plans include college, perhaps with a major in some sort of engineering, but music will continue to be an important aspect of his life.
